- Acquire your materials. Start with planters that can provide proper aeration to your plants root systems, high-quality soil, compost, hand-held gardening tools, and a watering can.
- Assess your growing conditions. Identify ho much light your balcony gets and place your plants accordingly. While tomatoes need full light, other plants, such as lettuces and herbs, can thrive in just a few hours of sunlight each day.
- Care for and harvest your bounty. Plant your seedlings in 2-4 inches of compost and soil mixture. Stagger your plantings over a period of a couple weeks to extend your harvest. Make sure to keep your plants well watered and fed. Using a garden claw, periodically scrape the surface of the soil to aerate. When your plants are ready for harvest, cut with scissors to prevent damage to the plant.
